Topics include his business; militia activities including balls, parades and a review; religion including a sermon on intemperance, and his opinion on the Millerites; a flood of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers; and Mesmerism. Also a brawl between Whigs and Democrats and a fatal stabbing during the election of 1844; the Mexican War; local scandals; and family news including Jane's joining the Lutheran Church, their marriage, the death of his father, birth of their daughter, her ill health and the hiring of a servant.
